Keeping Dogs Safe In Cars

View this video to see safe tips:  Keeping Dogs Safe In Cars

Unrestrained dogs dangerous to driver, passenger, and man's best friend.

AAA reports nearly 60% of dog owners have driven while distracted by their pets as passengers.

Taking man's best friend for a ride, can be risky.

Luis Aisa adopted his pet, Missy, 1 month ago from the Tulsa SPCA.
"She's just like a baby of your own, it's part of the family," Aisa said. "I put her in back of the car make sure she's sitting, because if you break, she might go forward or backward. Dogs don't have baby seats."
Dr. Melissa Montgomery, Tulsa SPCA Veterinarian, is promoting safety habits.
"Absolutely some kind of restraint is necessary and will keep everyone safer, dogs shouldn't ride on anyone's lap without a harness or device," Dr. Montgomery said.
The animal expert highly recommends pets be secured with a leash.
"Animals have fallen out or jumped out thinking they need to protect their owner," Dr. Montgomery said. "We can secure the pet to the headrest and in the back seat often to the seat belt."
Taking those extra steps can protect dogs from serious injury, or in some cases, death.
It is also recommended that dog owners purchase open, cage-like containers to transport dogs and to keep them cool in the heat.

New Faces - August 17, 2010

Meet our newest litter of kittens ready to find homes.
They are Raspberry, Lucky Ducky, and Playdough.  They are about 5 months old.  Their mother is feral and had them near a home of a concerned owner.  She set out live traps and captured them.  We spayed the mother and retuned her back to live with that owner.  The kittens were sickly, in fact Lucky Duck almost died, but with the expert care of our Vet and clinic staff they all are now healthy.  They are still learning social skills and need someone that will spend extra time with them.  They would prefer a home without dogs.  If you can take the time to make a new friend and want more information on these little guys and gal, please call us at 918-428-SPCA (7722).

Tulsa SPCA Lonely Hearts Club Pet of the Week

Jovial Jersey, LOOKING FOR (YOUR) LOVE
Hello everyone I’m Jersey. I am 2 years old. I was found by the cruelty investigator in January after he received a tip about a stray dog. When he found me I led him straight to my puppies. I was nearly starving myself, but I was still doing my best to feed my family. I am a smart, energetic, affectionate girl that likes to play hard! I prefer to play with male dogs, but I have been known to get along with like-minded females. I love playing fetch and keep away, but my favorite ways to stay in shape are: long walks or runs and wrestling with my doggie friends.
I’m also a good snuggler. I enjoy giving and receiving lots of affection. So if you want a friend to motivate you to get outdoors and get some fresh air, and or keep you company after a long day at the office I’m your girl!
It is unlikely that I have ever had a home of my own, so I will require some basic training, but I already know my basic commands, and I learned them lickety-split. I will learn how to live in a house quickly and look forward to having a soft place to rest my head every night!

Please look at my photo album so you can see just how much fun I am, or visit me at the Tulsa SPCA this weekend! Tell them Jersey girl sent you.

• may require tall fencing
• may be a senior citizen
• may be shy when meeting new people
• Size, big dogs are slower to find their new homes simply due to their size
